Is a house always a home? Is the grass always greener on the other side? I think not! I think it is like experimenting with a recipe. Sometimes you do not always follow the directions, (you end up putting in ingredients other than what's called for) but ultimately the finished product is delicious!

To make a house a home I believe you have to throw in a mixture of love, respect, happiness, and a cup running over with a feeling of security. You cannot forget memories, (some good-some not so good) they have to somewhat balance out each other, or you end up with too much of a bad taste...!

Above all the most important ingredient is your own personal touch. Everyone's recipe for making their house a home will be different, but as for me, the ingredients above made for a
fine cuisine

I will not get into details, as I want the reader to experience first hand the authors’ realistic description of this horrific event.

Fast-forward and we find Audra is now head of the IT department. Using her computer skills, she hacks into their security system looking for anything that will incriminate those responsible for her suffering. This is where the story strikes a dramatic turn of events.

In ‘Accountable to None’, Ashley Fontainne weaves a suspenseful tale of murder, revenge and justice – perfectly balanced.

I give Five Stars to this spellbinding thriller. Bravo!

I actually laughed out loud several times at her expense – although I do believe that is what the author intended to have happen. Author, Candy O’ Donnell, serves up a terrifying entrée of goodies with “Hell’s Fire” – no sugar added. In the first chilling story, a demon is no match for a woman with the stamina of a gladiator in Demon Slayer. Next, we follow a young couple as they move into their dream home. Heaven bound? More like Hell Bound when they find themselves surrounded by death, their dream home quickly becomes a nightmare. In Circle of Death, we observe a pair of amateur thieves as they desecrate a cemetery. However, before they can bask in their stolen wealth, death comes a calling. Her depiction of the characters and their surroundings are quite chilling. I thought I knew a little about what was in store for me getting into this book, as I have read Mason’s previous work – I was not disappointed! She originates the plot of the story using familiar surroundings and a cast of colorful characters. However, beware – after reading, you will have a second thought before stopping at a truck stop diner, taking an unfamiliar route to get to your destination, and even the howling of your four-legged friend will bring on a new meaning!

Horror Novel: Fiend - The Manifestation, by Phil Bolos

When asked to read Fiend—The Manifestation by Phil Bolos, I didn’t know that I was going to be reading a horror story. When I found that out, I hesitated, but decided to take a chance and add another genre to my variety of book reviews. I was planning to just read the beginning of the book, and then add it to my pile of “read for review” books. However, that is not what happened. I began to read, and only put the book down to get some sleep (but it did affect my dreams). Mr. Bolos took me on quite the trip…to the depths of…I don’t know where. It doesn’t appear that we went to hell, but somewhere very dark and scary.

The story takes readers between “our” world (my wonderful state of Wisconsin) and “another world” where the forces of good and evil are at battle. One thing is for sure, after reading Fiend—The Manifestation you will definitely think more about decisions that you make, I can pretty much guarantee that! The characters come alive through wonderful description, and you may recognize their characteristics in the lives of your family members and friends. Phil Bolos definitely knows how to paint a picture with words, and keep readers in suspense. So if you get scared when reading about evil and gory creatures, then you may want to think twice before reading this book. It was a fast read, but when in the “depths” I truly wanted to be out of there, and that didn’t happen fast enough for me, but then that was the author’s skill in getting this reader to feel the tension of good versus evil, in a very scary manner.

Joanne Watkins and her husband, Jack, are indeed colorful characters. Joanne is quite fond of cocktails – morning – noon and night. Who could blame the poor woman with a retired military officer – neo-Nazi sympathizer as a husband? Their relationship makes for a volatile plot in itself.

Patty and Ben Redford’s marital relationship is the epitome of what marriage is all about…well, almost. Ben, a consultant for the FBI, often brought his work home. With a PhD in economics, he managed to draw attention from the bureau when he published a paper on the subject of ‘hate groups.’ Can you see where I am going with this?

It is clear that Ms. Ullerich has first hand knowledge when describing the detailed beauty of the exotic locations, as her imagery is impeccable. In writing “At Risk,” the author weaves an intriguing plot of suspense and thrills. I look forward to reading more from this author. If you are a fan of this genre, you will be highly entertained.

As stated in her book, Jackie and her retired Air Force JAG husband reside in Palm Desert, California where her husband golfs while Jackie writes.

The discussion of whether tagging and liking ‘ones’ product page effectively boosts sales is an important topic. As an author with a handful of books available on Amazon, I am endlessly exploring profitable avenues.

Tagging is labeling something in order to enhance your odds of others finding it. There are those that disagree with this method. Let us look at how this works. You are sitting at your computer just browsing around on Amazon, and decide that you want to look for a book such as “how to write a paranormal thriller,” how does Amazon determine what to offer up? This is where the tagging comes into play. Placing organized tags to your book that are related to the subject greatly enhances your books odds of being found. When others agree with your tags and check the appropriate boxes – the books probability of ranking higher is significant. No one is going to purchase your book if they cannot find it!

Even when writing an article such as this – the process of tagging is essential in order for my editorial to gain exposure.

“Knights – Dragons – Beasts, Oh My!”

‘The Leaves of Dusk’ is the second of a two-part epic fantasy adventure by author, Mattius C. S. White – author of ‘The Exiled Son’. The journey continues as Tallic, the son of Lasech, continues his father’s quest to destroy evil and retain a balance of peace across the land.

Tallic and Dirlan struggle but lose their battle with the SangreLin army and are taken captive. We enter the collapsed entrance of the cave where we find his allies – the band of the Forghonyi, Santeris, Von Whitager, Shad, and the love of his life, Iolore, bloodied and bruised. Von Whitager takes the torch and leads them down into the deep cave in search of Tallic and Iolore’s infant son where he laid in the grips of the beast – a beast capable of not only taking life but restoring it as well. Iolore stood looking upon the beast who had given life back to her precious infant son and listened as he muttered his last words, “In the autumn of this green world, leaves always show their brightest colors at the dusk of summer, when they are faced with the darkness of approaching winter. The leaves of this world are falling. Let your colors shine bright and true in these dark hours, my friends, the Leaves of Dusk.”

While captive, Tallic has a wonderful vision of a past he had not lived, one without war and prejudice. However, he is quickly awakened by Dirlan’s deathly screams. Tallic glared up at his captor, Clybanus, as he held his wounded friend in his arms. Beat and broken, Tallic does not waver in the fact that his destiny must be fulfilled, but he mourns at the thought of – at whose expense.

Will Tallic be able to save himself and Dirlan from the band of evil tyrants? Will he be united with his love, Iolore, and their young infant? Will the band of Forghonyi cease to exist at the hands of wicked and vile beasts? Will those oppressed by the old SangreLin ever be freed?

Author, Mattius C. S. White, has managed to fulfill his reader’s thirst for the utmost fantasy adventure in a magical realm full of colorful, descriptive, and unique characters. I feel I should apologize for not mentioning all of the essential characters in this well-rounded tale, as they are many, and each play a fundamental role. I can truly say that I have never read a fantasy saga that had such intensity – one with a pivotal underlying message as such. Mr. White knows his genre and draws on his imagination to create a magnificent piece of literature – and magnificent it is.

In conclusion, I give ‘The Leaves of Dusk’ five stars for its uniqueness, well-defined characters and just all around joy to read.

“I’m a Bona-Fide Writer!”

To date, my royalties off my first two books have paid my electric bill, bought a few pair of jeans, and paid for a very nice night out on the town. According to my husband, I have a nice hobby going on here...

Let us look at the definition of career, shall we! Okay, it goes something like this, ‘a. A chosen pursuit; a profession or occupation.
b. The general course or progression of one's working life or one's professional achievements:
c. Doing what one does as a permanent occupation or lifework:

Line c. confuses me just a bit, although I do plan to write permanently or until death do we part, so to speak…

Now, let us look at the definition of hobby. It goes something like this,
a. A diversion that occupies one's time and thoughts (usually pleasantly) b. An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.

In the category of ‘What are the most important things in your life’, I would answer directly below God, my husband, my children, and grandchildren comes writing. I have always loved storytelling, creating unique characters, and then placing them in an atmosphere of supernatural terror...

I may never be on the New York Bestseller List or win an award for my writing (not saying it wouldn't be nice) either way, I'm satisfied in knowing with the books I have managed to get published, I'll be leaving a legacy to my family, friends and to the devoted fans of my work.

Well, what the hey, it doesn’t matter if you have a career in writing or you consider your writing a hobby. You can be sure of one thing, if writing is in your blood, if you’re passionate about expressing your creative endeavors with pen and paper, you’re a bona-fide writer!

Do I take the time to write as often as I should? Uh, no! Am I going to change that? Uh, yes! When I first began to write, I skipped meals, ignored phone calls, spent about an hour a week watching tv, and focused totally on the project at hand. I have to admit – wouldn’t hurt for me to skip a couple of meals!

Reality check.

If I had to live off my royalties to survive - much less live an extravagant lifestyle, well it ain’t happening! But like I always say…never say never!)

The reader is introduced to the accused, Chad Evans, in the beginning, and will read in his own words what he recalls happened that ill-fated day. You will read about how the media exploited the case in the news – an act all too often being played out in our society. You will read how the investigators for the town of Kittery, Maine, the city of Rochester, New Hampshire, and the police hastily made the assumption that Kassidy’s death was a homicide.

The focus of the investigation is assembled. The key players are Chad Evans, boyfriend of Amanda Bortner, mother of Kassidy, Jennifer Bortner, aunt to Kassidy, and Jeff Marshall, boyfriend of Jennifer Bortner. You will read the autopsy findings of the chief medical examiner for Maine, Dr., Margaret Greenwald, and how they differ from the nationally renowned pathologist, Dr. Michael Baden’s report, as well as countless transcripts, links, and testimony from multiple players in the case.

Moreover, this book is about a cry for justice; the search for truth where a court case riddled with such inaccuracies, false assumptions, and an obscure blatant lack of the defense team to try this case in an appropriate and suitable manner – we are left shaking our heads, and by all accounts, from what I have read, has put an innocent man in prison fighting for his life.

November 9th, 2000, twenty-one month old Kassidy Caitlin Bortner, died under mysterious circumstances. ‘Eye Contact’ was written with the objective to reveal new evidence and testimonies that will exonerate Chad Evan’s, as well as, Amanda Bortner, to bring to light the travesty of justice in this case and to seek out the real cause of Kassidy’s death.

You, the reader, will have to read and come to your own conclusions as to Chad and Amanda’s innocence or guilt in this heart wrenching case. I will end my review with a quote taken from a line in ‘Eye Contact’ – a pivotal statement made by Nineteenth century U.S. Senator Daniel Webster of New Hampshire, “There is nothing so powerful than the truth, and often nothing so strange.”

The author’s account of this era is quite astonishing as he utilizes a brilliant imagination in his writing. He creates a world so very different than we know, but at the same time – he incorporates the need we all have for equality and balance in our own lives, and the lives of others. Maybe she decided that 70 percent of the profits, she will more than likely receive, are more favorable than say 20 to 40 percent - you think? “A Touching Tale of Human Endurance”

“Mourning Doves After The Fire,” by Charles D. Blanchard, introduces the reader to similarities that exist between humans and animals – the determination to survive. The dove represents qualities of faith, love, peace, and is a symbol of the spirit in many beliefs. In the bible – the Old Testament – Noah released a dove to signal the flood was over. Thus, the dove has become an emblem for deliverance and forgiveness.

The story begins in the year 1910, by introducing the reader to, Abigail Whitman, a 28-year-old woman whose world is about to drastically change. Her mother, Maggie, is a dominant figure in her life, as her father left them when Abby was an infant. Years of struggling to survive without a husband and father figure have wreaked havoc on their relationship. On a routine checkup, Abby finds out she has cancer. Raymond Fletcher, a prominent doctor and an acquaintance of five years earlier, is given the disheartening task of having to reveal the terrible news. You learn quickly that the chemistry between these two individuals is electrifying. Determined to find a cure, Doctor Fletcher seeks help from a fellow colleague who is experimenting a new cancer treatment. You follow along as Abby endures painful injections, surgery – one heartbreak after another in the search for a miracle.

A passage from chapter nine, A female mourning dove perched herself atop a telephone pole. Her eyes blinked steadily as the first crow swooped down on her mate and pecked at his eyes and neck. The mate told his companion to fly away immediately. “You must be strong, my love,” he said to her. “You will have to fend for yourself and our squabs. Raise them to be strong and trust no other birds, not even our own kind.” “I will find a safe place. I promise,” she replied in anguish, as this was the last time they would see each other.

“Mourning Doves After The fire,” exemplifies the innate longing to survive and flourish. The interaction between Abby and the mourning dove is breathtaking and is described beautifully. The author is quite knowledgeable of classical music and incorporates the importance it plays in our lives as shown between Abby and a young girl named, Madison.

“Mourning Doves After The Fire” is author, Charles Blanchard’s, first novel – a novel well deserved of an award in excellence. The characters are well defined and the storyline flows with ease. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and I know you will too.

Hold on to your seat – “A Work in Progress” is an exhilarating ride”

Fast paced, ‘A Work in Progress’ will make you late for supper and keep you up way past your bedtime – you will not want to put it down until the last page is turned. Well developed characters and a plot with many twists and turns make this thriller a winner.

The main character, Jeremy Jackson, is a financial wizard, so to speak. However, where there is money, there are always investors – and not always legitimate. Money laundering, conspiracy theories – who can he trust? His body is aching and his mind is growing wearier by the day. He receives a letter from his darling wife, Cassie, in which she informs him that she and the children have been taken captive. She tells him that the house is bugged and that her involvement was all an act in order to try to save them. Is this a trap - another set-up, or could she be telling the truth? Are there terrorist involved?

Non-stop action, heroic characters, and ultimate suspense make this an electrifying thriller – one ‘Oliver Stone’ would be proud of! If you are a fan of ‘John Grisham’s work, then I think you will enjoy reading ‘A Work in Progress’ by Larry Sheridan – as this author too has a promising skill for writing in the thriller genre!

“Eloquent Style of Writing – Captivating Read”

War With Pigeons, by Tae Kim, is suspenseful, thrilling, and in my opinion – a piece of literary talent at its finest. Tae Kim introduces the reader to the Asian-American community so many of us (until now) have not been aware of. I think the author did an excellent job in describing the room salons in Midtown Manhattan, cafés, and clubs that the young Asian men frequented. Written in first and third – person narrative, the author manages to captivate his audience with both techniques of storytelling – not easily achieved by most writers. Through his characters, the author expresses every human emotion – love, desire, bereavement, and jealousy with realism and undying truth. The words leap from the pages and touch your heart as the author speaks of a world and culture that is quite different than our own, but ultimately develops to reveal a common thread.

The setting for the story begins with a funeral on a stormy Easter Sunday as many people gather to pay homage to Simon – the main character. It is here that you are introduced to several different characters – all meticulously described in detail. It is when his friend, Peter, is appointed administrator to the will that the reader learns of Simon’s tragic love affair, and the events that lead up to his death. Peter uncovers a journal of his friend Simon, which reveals his friend in a very different light, and eventually dredges up disturbing memories of loss and love in his own heart.

One of the most memorable characters in the book for me was Simon’s mother. The poignant moment arrives when she makes the decision to leave her husband and young child in Korea, so that she could immigrate to the U.S. in hopes to make a better life for them. Naïve, she expected to reunite with them after a short period of time, but weeks turned into a year – valuable time lost that could never be replaced.

We often trust that if we stand up for what we believe in and do the right thing – the result will be a positive one. Not always. However, those who do stand up for what they believe in earn the respect of others as well as staying true to their values. The author conveys this vital message many times throughout the story. I trust we will be seeing more literary works from this gifted writer. I give War With Pigeons two thumbs up and five stars – highly recommended!

The Power of Prayer

It's true what they say, when one door closes - another door opens. Three years ago I finished my first full length novel, Hollowing Screams, and began the process of submitting to literary agents and editors. I received several e-mails back from agents wanting a partial. The the answer was always, "It just isn't right for us" or "It just doesn't fit our needs at this time." Then it happened - a new and upcoming publishing house accepted my work and offered me a contract. However, my excitement was short lived. Negotiations on the contract fell through and I was back to square one. Feeling somewhat depressed at the notion that I may never see my manuscript come to print, I began to pray - some people might call it meditation, I call it prayer. I ask 'God' for some sort of sign, to give me a reason to keep trying. I questioned myself as to if my writing really had any merit at all. A few days passed by and I received another request, this time from a wonderful and talented young man by the name of, Dimi Nakov, at Zodiac Entertainment. A few days later I signed contracts with him for screenplay/film rights to not one, but all of my works. A few days later I received a contract with an offer to publish Hollowing Screams through, R.J.B. Publishing. I'm excited to say the contract was more than fair!

Some people would say what happened was all just a coincidence - as for myself, I know the power of prayer is undeniable. I will continue to put pen to paper - to share my love of storytelling. Do I believe that my prayers will always deliver what I ask for? No - but I do believe I will always receive an answer...

What The...Am I Really Reading This Crap!!

When I decided to actually sit down and write a story, I didn't have a clue as to what genre it would fall into - nor did I care. I've always loved reading a suspense thriller, with a splash of paranormal added in to spice it up a bit. Born in the ice-age, I was an avid fan of 'Alfred Hitchcock', 'The twilight Zone' series - no, not the 'Twilight', vampire falls in love with mortal girl and fights the wolf boy for her love, series. Although - I wish I'd thought of that one first...! If I had a choice, I'd rather not be known for writing in any one particular genre, but instead recognized as a writer of what I call hybrid literature. I love suspense with thrills, humor, romance, and yes -Paranormal Activity (pretty good flick btw)

What am I getting at, you ask-scratching your head and pondering the question, "What the...am I still reading this crap?" Guess as a writer, I just often wonder why we have to be stuck in a certain category of genre - wish it could be just plain old fiction or non-fiction. However, guess that would make it more difficult to find your favorite author when looking on the bookshelf at Barnes and Noble, or when sifting through Amazon kindle, Nook and etc... Okay, if I haven't given you something to think about, then at least I've given you a reason to wonder, "Who is this person - what has she written, and what the hell is she ranting about?"

The Great Flood of 2011

A family watches helplessly as their belongings are swept under by the raging waters. A poor farmer looks on as his crops are flooded and his lively hood is swept down stream. Thousands of people flee their homes - memories shattered. In a small town known as 'Morehouse' 280 homes (about two-thirds of the towns residences) are destroyed. Neighbors pull together to lend a helping hand to one another without thought or question for their own safety. Not since the great flood of 1937 have we witnessed such peril.

With flood waters receding in Southeast Missouri, residents finally can get a look at the damage. However, they already know that their lives, and the lives of their friends and neighbors will forever be scarred.

"The Evolution of Horror Movies"

As a small child, one of the first emotions we express is fear. Fear of the dark, afraid to look
under our bed, and fear of the unknown is not only terrifying but also exhilarating.
The horror movies of today have evolved in that earlier horror flicks contained much less
blood and gore. One of the classics, 'House on Haunted Hill' starring Vincent Price debuted
in 1959 and terrified audiences without showing any gory details. Instead, the director
played on our fear and let the audience use their own imagination. The master of horror
Alfred Hitchcock knew how to manipulate and shock his audience by merely using camera
angles and special lighting, creating eerie shots of terror that panned in and out quickly on
his subjects. Who can forget the original ‘Psycho’ (1960) or 'The Birds' (1963) they are still
horrifying to watch.

Again I have mentioned a very small fraction of Horror classics, but I think you get the
idea. In 1999, Mr. Night Shyamalan 'Sixth Sense' debuted and received rave reviews from
audiences and critics alike. Although Shyamalan opted to include a few explicit scenes of
gore, but for only minor seconds, it still possessed much of the same elements as its counter
classics. The same classic style of the past can be said about M. Night Shyamalan's 2001
'The Others'.

Again, I have mentioned just a few of what I personally feel will stand the test of time as far
as horror classics go. I remember the first time I saw the original 'Halloween' it was 1978 and
just into a few minutes of the movie I was hooked. John Carpenter used our childhood fear
of the boogeyman, and one of the most celebrated holidays of the year to entice our
underlying insecurities in the fear of the unknown and the supernatural. I was hooked!
And then there is director, Rob Zombie's version - I must say, and I think many would agree, the director could have left out much of the slice and dice scenes, and it would have still been a terrifying horror flick.

Oh well, each to their own. One thing for sure there is plenty of horror flicks to choose
from, and with such an enormous variety, one is sure to find a favorite!

Based on a true story: “Terminal Research” by Jon Batson, should be the name you see when the credits role at the end of a suspense thriller at your local theater. This book had all the makings of a five star movie matinee. Mr. Batson takes each one of the characters and brings them to life, and the storyline glides with simplicity. Writing great dialogue is essential in forming a personal connection to the reader – Jon Batson does just that!

As the story begins, a young woman is held against her will in a mental institution. Is there a conspiracy going on here? Creator of a newsletter titled ‘Look Both Ways’ Jack Richmond is following a lead to find the person or persons that had robbed him of his platform – burned his newsletter office to the ground and attacked his friends. Driving up Topanga Canyon Boulevard, he looks out for anyone that appeared suspicious. Jack spots a slender black woman with stunning features coming out of the nearby post office. He soon realizes its Letitia, an old friend from New York. He quickly recalls remembering how she and another friend, Jacob, had mysteriously vanished from his life. Going on a gut impulse, he decides to carefully follow her. Stopping in front of a house, Letitia gets out and goes in. Glancing at the mailbox, Jack gets the surprise of his life when he reads the inscription underneath their names, ‘Look Both Ways.’ Could it be! Could it be his old friends were the culprits? What reasons would they have to betray their friend? On the other hand, could there be a greater work of evil going on here? Oh, you had better believe there is!

I am not going to get into the story any deeper than that. However, ‘Terminal Research’ is most definitely a conspiracy thriller indeed – a story that will keep you thinking about what you have read long after the book is placed on the bookshelf. I highly recommend this read, and suggest to my readers they check out Mr. Batson’s other literary works.

I have read books revealing ones personal experiences of the afterlife – traveling through tunnels of bright light, and seeing the vision of a higher power. ‘Heaven is for Real’ is unique in that the perspective of this story is expressed through the eyes of a small child (barely three-years-old at the time) to his parents. This young child conveys a message of experiencing a divine miracle with conviction and indisputable detail.

Co-author, father, and narrator, Todd Burpo, begins the story by revealing seven months of bad luck involving his own personal struggles, his narrow escape with cancer, and several surgeries for a shattered leg. A pastor of his own church, he also served as a volunteer firefighter and high school wrestling coach. He relied heavily on his strong faith through all of his trials of sickness, but still at certain times he questioned, why me? Over a year later, just when things seemed to be looking up – tragedy would strike again.

In early 2003, he decided to turn a scheduled church board-meeting trip into a much-needed family vacation. He, his wife Sonja, and their two young children, daughter Cassie, and three-year-old son Colton, set out on a journey just outside of Denver. Two days before the trip, Colton took ill with a fever and stomachache. A trip to their family doctor revealed that a stomach flue was going around town, and his symptoms fit the criteria. After much prayer that their son would feel well enough to make the trip – their prayers were answered.

A short while into the trip, after a wonderful day at the Butterfly Pavilion, three-year-old Colton fell ill again. Realizing their son’s condition was worsening they rushed Colton back home to see his family doctor once again. After spending three days at the hospital, and the doctor not being able to diagnose their son’s problem, a choice had to be made. Checking their young son out of Imperial hospital, they made the long grueling trip to the Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte. It was there that Colton would be diagnosed with a ruptured appendix and had to have emergency surgery. Mr. Burpo and his wife’s faith would truly be tested as they prayed their son’s life to be spared. After seventeen days and two grueling surgeries, their prayers were answered. Amazingly, Colton recovered rapidly from the ordeal and could finally go home.

On July 3, 2003 less than four months after his ordeal, Colton now four-years-old reveals the first of many accounts of heaven.

In my opinion, ‘Heaven is for Real’ is necessary read for anyone that doubts the possibility that there is a spiritual world awaiting our arrival. This read touched me profoundly in so many ways. I urge the reading audience to pick up a copy of this astonishing piece of literature – embrace the marvelous experiences this child has broadcast to the world – I have!

"Sensational - Stunning - Mind Provoking!!"

Never Mind Yaar by, `K. Mathur' takes the reader on a stunning journey. The four main characters are Binaifer, Louella, Shalini, and Bhagu - four close friends of different ethnic backgrounds. Set in Mumbai, India, the author communicates her love of this beautiful country by giving vivid detail when describing the surroundings. In reading this story I believe the author took great measures to develop these characters - quite realistic. Through her story, she gives the reader an understanding about what constitutes cultural identity - and how the various aspects of our worldview affect us. It is a story about true friendship, heartache, and the strong bond they share with one another. I felt a real connection with the character `Mem' (the matriarch of Shalini's family) as she represents the strength and love one must have in order to help sustain stability within the family unit. I highly recommend this brilliant work of literature, and look forward to reading more from this talented author known as, `K. Mathur'.

Raymond Durgnat's A Long Hard Look at 'Psycho'

The master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock’s, ‘Psycho,’ continues to captivate, and inspire film critics, filmmakers, writers, and all who has the need to dissect his work in order to understand his genius. A Long Hard Look at ‘Psycho’ is an extensive study of the classic film and our reactions to the ingenious shots, sound, and imagery – an assessment into the mind of the master of suspense. Durgnat analysis every aspect of each scene filmed, and continues too – for lack of a better word, dismember many scenes.

Let us look at the man known as one of the most well respected critics of our time. Durgnat was an experienced writer, a fanatic film history scholar, and a master of critiques with a distinctive style to say the least. In the late 1970s, he taught film in California along side, Manny Farber, Jean-Pierre Gorin and Jonathan Rosenbaum. He often lectured on cinema at several academic institutions towards the end of his life in 2002. He was the author of several groundbreaking books such as, Films and Feelings (1967), A Mirror For England (1970), Sexual Alienation in the Cinema (1971), The Strange Case of Alfred Hitchcock and Jean Renoir (both 1974), and a study of WR: Mysteries of the Organism in the BFI film classics series (1999).

On page 176 ‘Making Conversation,’ Durgnat describes the feelings of the first-time viewer towards Norman and a small portion of it reads as follows, “As deceitful in this conversation as he is, it’s in a vulnerable way, as a victim of Arbogast’s aggression, so he benefits from the ‘Marnie effect’ (audience sympathy for a hard pressed criminal in difficulty). He’s very sensitive, in a way quite fresh among villains, and it elicits what Hollywood called ‘audience recognition’ – the audience recognizing, on screen, its own, intimate experience – in this case, of exasperating conversations. Norman’s situation may be ‘melodramatic’ (extreme), but his ‘surface sensitivity’ finds echoes aplenty in us.”

In all I found Raymond Durgnat’s categorization of (Alfred Hitchcock’s), ‘Psycho’ annoying, stimulating, and at certain points in the book nothing short of – mind blowing! I did find it to be a scholastic read and one I will not soon forget. I am proud to add it to my book collection and I know that you will be too.

“A Wicked Parody of Tales”

We begin with “Dead Dog Dies,” a tale of a poor little zombie boy named Glugg. It is the one-year anniversary of his death. To his dismay, he soon realizes the living do not like zombies enough to give them presents. Taking a different approach, he puts the word out to his fellow zombies – explains to them what presents are and gives them his wish list. His excitement boiled over as he unwrapped his presents – expecting money in a card or the newest game system. Excitement fizzled when upon opening his gifts he uncovered boxes of dirt and a broken off jawbone. However, with the help of his one living friend, Crowley – all just might not be lost!

Our next tale, “Kill, Baby, Kill,” an offshore drilling rig disaster plays havoc on Mother Nature and she takes revenge. Okay, this story seems familiar – too close for comfort! What do you get when you pit a big business – some know it all environmentalists, and a surprise nemesis against each other? One heck of a scary story!

Last but certainly not least is the ‘Broadway Sin-Sation…’ “Wickeder,” is a play introduced by the Crypt – Keeper’s friend, the old witch, a squeakquel to Frank N. Balmed’s classic, The Wizard of Ooze! I now must add – this was my favorite tale of all, and my eight-year-old grandsons favorite as well. You follow Dotty’s trial in the murder of Alfalfa, the wickeder witch, and then you are introduced to the oppressed munchkins. Need I say more? It is a ninety-degree turn from the classic story indeed – but what a fun read!

The illustrations for each story are amazing and fit the storylines to a tee. I found the tongue – in – cheek dialogue throughout the tales blissfully amusing. With just the right amount of guts and gore this “Tales From The Crypt” selection gets two thumbs up!

I found myself laughing out loud numerous times from the witty dialogue and humor – quite embarrassing really. You will have no problem getting your child to sit still for this read, that is a promise. These stories follow in the “Tales of the Crypt” tradition and will capture the imagination of all ages.

For some truly enjoyable reads look for, “The Hardy Boys – Crawling With Zombies,” “Breaking Down,” “Nancy Drew – Vampire Slayer,” and man more creepy reads.

Cruisin’ with Vengeance – a thrill at sea and on land. Author, Roosevelt Mompremier, writes an exceptional thriller from start to finish. The reader is introduced to Rick Solomon, a man falsely accused of rape. After doing hard time in Miami Federal Correctional Institution, he is finally released. After enduring countless beatings and vile degradation, he emerges with rage and furry against his accusers.

In a perfect society, there would be no place for a corrupt judicial system – racism, etc. However, we live in a far less than perfect world and Mr. Mompremier introduces the reader to some of the darkest and most self-absorbed individuals, which in reality – do indeed exist. His plot is well played out and his use of gritty dialogue (where required) is superb. The author describes each character in great detail – so much so, leaving the reader to feel as if they could pick any one of them out of a lineup.

Cruisin’ With Vengeance is a story about greed, lust, addiction, murder, and revenge. However, it is much more than just another intriguing thriller, it is a thriller with a positive message of how important forgiveness truly is – even under direst circumstances. As well, it is obvious Mr. Mompremier did his research while creating this thrilling masterpiece, as his knowledge of cruise ships and our legal system are depicted with great accuracy in his writings.

So buy your ticket and get on board Cruisin’ With Vengeance, it’s a hell of a ride you will not soon forget!

Roosevelt Mompremier, a humanitarian, a native of Haiti, is also the author of Cruisin’ With The Dreamers. If you love a great thriller, I highly recommend reading this talented author’s work.

A True Tale of “Supernatural Phenomenon”

Tony and Debra Pickman along with their newborn son, Taylor, have attracted the attention of paranormal investigators, psychics, and the media. The infamous Sallie house stood nestled between two other houses just two blocks from the Missouri river. Records later revealed that it was the oldest house on the block. Newlyweds and expecting their first child, the Pickman’s desperately needed a spacious house that provided specific amenities such as, a large yard for their growing family, and preferably in a safe location. They would find their dream home – or so they thought, following a tip from Tony’s brother. Debra reveals that upon entering the house for the first time she felt a peace of calm, no indication of the terror that would soon follow.

Soon after they moved in – thirty days to be exact, the Pickman’s began to notice some strange happenings such as, lights slowly dimming then blasting at full wattage. Changing the bulbs, fuses, and still experiencing electrical problems, they hired an electrician to inspect the problem, but upon inspection, no problem was to be found. At this point, they still had no reason to suspect their house might be haunted. One evening their dog, Sasha, followed Tony upstairs, stopped dead in his tracks in front of the nursery doorway, growling and baring her teeth. They could not understand what would warrant such a reaction as the room was empty – a reaction that would occur several more times throughout their stay.

Soon after the author speaks of one particular night, about 3:30 a.m., being awaken by a blood-curdling scream, then hearing several loud thumps from down stairs. Before she could go investigate, something unforeseen struck her body and face. Paralyzed with fear she screamed awakening her husband. After regaining composure, they would investigate and find nothing out of the ordinary.

On June 26, 1993 their son, Taylor Jacob was born. After several sleepless nights due to their newborn’s excessive crying, Debra opted to ask for help and called upon her sister in New York. The day before her arrival, Tony agreed to help with the vacuuming and rearranging of the nursery while Debra and the baby relaxed in the room across the hall. Suddenly, he burst into the room shouting that the teddy bear mobile had started play on its own – again no explanation could be found.
The nursery seemed to be the so-called hot spot for eerie occurrences such as, finding stuffed animals and toys levitating, disappearing and then reappearing in different locations of the room, lights flickering on and off by themselves, and eerie shadows appearing moving around the room. The demonic behavior would soon surface by attacking Debra’s husband, Tony, and leaving deep scratches across his body – documented with pictures and witnesses.

Whatever one may believe, this documented tale of supernatural phenomena will keep the reader captivated and wanting to learn more about this experience. I found this read quite fascinating, interesting, and disturbing. I read the Pickman’s story as authentic and legitimate as told by a family who truly believes they and their home – The Sallie House, experienced a true Haunting.

Debra and her family lived in the Sally House in Atchison, Kansas for twenty-two months. The infamous property has been featured on the television shows Sightings, Unexplained Mysteries, and A haunting. It was also the subject of a Showtime move called Haunted Heartland. 'ReBound', by author ‘Pamela Swyers’, is a necessary read for anyone whom has ever been dumped by their significant other. It is a feel good, optimistic story about finding ones own way in the world, and encountering true love along the way. Samantha Wells is an intelligent young woman with an associate’s degree from Georgia Gwinnett College. As we all know too well, having an associate’s degree from college does not always guarantee a lucrative career. To help supplement her income while in college, Samantha takes on a part-time job at a coffee shop café. After two years of putting in one application after another for an administrating position, to no avail, she finds herself working full-time. When her somewhat spoiled, rich boyfriend, Zak, dumps her like a sack of potatoes, she finds herself alone and on her own. Through mutual acquaintances, she meets a young lad by the name of Max Jacobs, and life will never be the same. Samantha finds love does not always come with fireworks, it sometimes creeps in silently. Author, ‘Pamela Swyers’, takes the reader on a journey through the vicissitudes of relationships and reveals how they overcome their own insecurities. I would recommend this lovely read to young teens and adults alike. I found the author, ‘Pamela Swyers’, writing style easy to read and the content quite relevant to ones everyday life. If you are looking for a fun and entertaining read, pick up a copy of ‘ReBound’ by ‘Pamela Swyers’ – you will not be disappointed! “A Thriller From Start To Finish”

Dressed for a Kill by Brian Bianco, is a gripping suspense thriller. I picked it up, turned the page, and did not stop reading until the last word was read. The author stimulates your imagination with twists and turns – keeps you captivated throughout your read. What makes a great suspense thriller? In my opinion, a great suspense thriller has to have precarious situations, unique characters, and a strong plot – hence, once again I introduce you to Dressed for a Kill.

Chicago Tribune reporter, Miles Fischer, wants the story and all the glory that goes along with it. This thrilling tale of suspense starts out with Mr. Fischer covering a trial involving rape and murder. Soon after the defendants are acquitted of all charges, they are found murdered – both killed by arrows of a crossbow. With an abiding passion for finding the truth, Miles does his research and discovers two more cases that oddly resemble the most recent crime. Employing whatever means it takes to get the story; he often uses such tactics as intimidation – making several enemies along the way. He turns up the heat when the FBI and a former police officer, turned private investigator, join the hunt. As the plot thickens, so to speak, Miles Fischer finds himself in danger of being the next target.

The main character, Miles Fischer, often walks a fine line when trying not to break ethical rules. His personal life is a catastrophe. His impetuous behavior and reputation as a womanizer ultimately destroys his marriage. However, when his investigative instincts kick in, his brutal determination and disregard for his own safety is without flaws. I found the author, Brian Bianco’s, writing similar to that of Kurt Luedtke and David Rayfiel, author of Absence of malice – not as much as in the story subject, but as in the way Bianco displays the art of utilizing psychological twists with exuberant anticipation. I would also like to mention the exquisite book cover for this literature; it is truly a piece of art! I give Dressed for a Kill by Brian Bianco 5 stars – 6 stars if I could!

The reader is taken on five different journeys yet they are all the same. Evil comes in many different forms and in many different places. Would you sell you soul to the devil to spare your child’s life? Would you listen and believe the prophecy of an old woman? How far would you go to teach a man a lesson at the two women did in the last two stories? Would you remain in a house with a ghost?

This is a very compelling and thought provoking book with excellent plot lines and that unique and different from most paranormal and psychological thrillers today.

This is where I think the author uses a clever tactic in his writing to further draw the reader in. The author shows detective Brooks sifting through several articles and books on the subject, such as, ‘The Ghosts of Pennsylvania’ by Dr. Frederick Mann – ‘The Spirits’ Book’ – a paper by William James, the philosopher – and a pamphlet by Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist and founder of analytic psychiatry. It might sound ridiculous, but I found myself googling these author’s. I had to know if they and their work were real! I give ‘Ghosts’ by Noel Hynd five stars and highly recommend this ghostly read.

I settle in my comfy chair and began to read “Epiphany” and immediately I am captivated by this prolific tale. The wise men – an Asian, an Arab, and an Ethiopian unite to achieve the impossible, to observe the birth of Jesus. Along their journey, they battle the Romans, King Herod, travel grueling land, and tussle with the supernatural. In my opinion, Harrington delivers a masterpiece of art through his storytelling. His eye for description and detail is astounding. The author draws you into the story by taking you on a journey with the three Magi through China, Petra, the grand peaks of Arabia, and down through Ethiopia unto the holy land of Bethlehem. As a young child I remember, from my early church upbringing, the story of the three wise men – bringing gifts to our Lord Savior. One of the largest events in preparation for Christmas includes revisiting these events. However, not much is known about the mysterious Magi. Down through centuries the traditions have became progressively more embellished. Through Harrington’s imagination and creativity we can walk in their shoes – so to speak – live their passion; experience their undying faith.

When reading “Epiphany” it’s easy to forget that, what you’re reading is a mixture of fiction. In my opinion, it reads as a compelling theory – one in which would make an extraordinary MOVIE!

I give “Epiphany” five stars and recommend this gripping novel to all who enjoy reading historical fiction at its best. “Epiphany” is Harrington’s first novel – let’s hope he honors us with another very soon.

"A Storybook With An Important Message for All"

I so enjoyed reading The Sun and the Moon to my grandchildren, ages five and nine. As I began to read, they sat silently listening to every word captivated by the beautiful illustrations throughout each page. An entertaining story indeed, but it also teaches the importance of unconditional love and patience. It teaches our children to be aware that for every action there is a reaction, and depending on the action taken the consequences can sometimes be devastating. The story describes how we are all dependent on one another as well as the world around us, that for every time we act out in fear and anger we not only hurt ourselves but hurt everyone around us.

In my opinion, I believe The Sun and the Moon also tells a poignant story that illustrates the importance of environmental awareness. Too many times we take our planet for granted – forget just how beautiful and nurturing she is. The author takes a unique approach in exploring the feelings a child sometimes experiences due to his or her anger toward one another. I particularly liked the fact that in the middle of the story the author breaks away for a moment and focuses on the human aspect of anger and fear. Through his book, the author teaches a positive lesson for children and adults alike.

As the story goes, one day unexpectedly, the Sun tells the Moon he is through. He is tired of doing all the work. When the Moon questions his actions the Sun retaliates by telling the Moon his reflected light is not useful to anyone anyway. Reacting to one another’s anger, they walk out on their responsibilities - distressing the earth in a devastating way. Will the Sun and Moon be able to stop their quarreling in time to save the earth?

Are You Making These Silly Query Mistakes?

Sitting on this side of the editorial desk is amazing. I hear stories about how hard it is to get published, all the while reviewing queries that cross my desk.

This unique perspective has vividly illustrated an interesting phenomenon in the publishing world: It's not hard to get published, what's evidently hard is writing something publishers need. Let me explain.

When it comes to queries and proposals, we rarely reject a manuscript due to sloppy writing. Writers tend to be an educated and talented lot. Nine times out of ten the problem lies in one of these areas:

The author hasn't read the submission guidelines.

We publish (maybe) one piece of fiction per year. Yet 99 percent of all queries received are for fiction. We're clear about this in our guidelines, yet the queries flow in. Of the remaining one percent, most queries are not in our genre. We probably receive one appropriate query every six months, if that.

Next problem, getting the name wrong. My name isn't “Bart.” Maury's name isn't “Mary.” Our name isn't “editor” either. Personalize the query for a better chance of getting it read.

Finally, we don't publish books over 100k words. We say this in the guidelines. Yet, we receive queries for (up to) 250k words. That's simply too long. It makes for a big, expensive book that we'll have trouble selling.

Simple fix? Read the submission guidelines carefully before submitting. Your competition isn't doing this so you've got an automatic leg up.

No SASE

Snail mailing a query without a SASE will usually not receive a response.

When I've got my marketing hat on, I know it's imperative to make it effortless for a prospective customer to respond to my offer. I slip in a SASE. I make the order form easy to navigate. I do everything I can to make the process simple because even one extra step can depress response by a LOT.

Not including a SASE is a big mistake. Some writers will include an e-mail address, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a response. That would require effort on the part of the publisher. I'm not saying we're a lazy bunch, but I can say we're busy and sending rejections is not fun. Any “not fun” activity gets put off until... well... until we've got a spare minute to craft a response, correctly type in the e-mail address, and hit “send.” And that spare minute can be a long time in coming.

Also, sending queries via e-mail can be tricky as well. More than once, I've received a frustrated e-mail from an author asking why I didn't respond to their query. Sometimes I didn't realize they sent a query.

Spam filters can catch your e-mail. Sometimes an overzealous “deleting” session can toss it in the “trash” unread. Who knows?

Follow up your queries with a polite e-mail or send it snail mail and include a SASE.

Not researching your target publisher

Know your reader. It's every writer's mantra. If you can touch your reader, you'll sell your work.

The same goes for the query process.

Capture the voice of your intended audience... the publisher. Read what they've published. Find out what they're looking for and give it to them. Ask yourself, “Who are their readers?” “How can I serve them?” “What can I do to make their readers' lives better, easier, more fun?”

Once you've answered these questions, you can better write a query that will literally knock off their socks. :)

Demonstrating no marketing knowledge

Most queries focus on the author. “I'm the author of...” “I've written...” “My education includes...”

Sure, this is important information, but there's a better way to frame it.

Whenever you write something... anything... always write directly to your reader. This creates an interesting situation for you as a writer. Your article, book, whatever you're pitching should speak directly to your reader while your query should speak directly to the potential publisher about their readers.

Sure, you may hold an important degree in a particular subject, but why should the reader care? What's in it for them?

If you concentrate your queries on answering the all-important “what's in it for me” question that inevitably dominates all reader's minds, you've just increased your chances of making the sale.

When you concentrate on your reader, compellingly answer “what's in it for me,” you're demonstrating solid marketing knowledge. Your potential publisher will appreciate your marketing savvy.

Your book doesn't have a large potential readership

Publishing is all about readership, not authors. If your project has a limited readership, your work likely won't get published.

Now, don't get the terms “limited readership” confused with “niche.”

A niche consists of a small, targeted subjects, a sliver of overall readership. Dominating a niche is a good thing. Even becoming a leader in a sub-niche is good. Once you've mastered a niche, you've got it made.

“Limited readership” on the other hand, is selecting a readership so small that you can't drum enough readers to support your writing habit.

For example, it's been my experience that it's really tough for a poet to make a living as a writer, not because poetry isn't cool, it's an art form I truly admire, there simply aren't enough readers willing to shell out the dough to purchase poetry. Fiction runs a close second.

The late Gary Halbert said that to become a success in your market, “find a hungry mob, then build a hamburger stand in their path.”

I agree. Find a niche, become the resident expert, master rudimentary marketing techniques, carefully read the writer's guidelines, and most of all... have fun.

And that's when things get really interesting. :)

“A Call to Faith and Freedom” is a masterpiece of historical fiction set in seventh-century Scotland. Journey back through this period of time when Christians utilized treachery and torment against the Celts in an effort to have power over the land and ultimately replace the present religion with their own.

Upon reading the first page, I was immediately hooked. Roe’s depiction to vivid detail is impeccable to say the least. I journeyed alongside knights as they rode horseback into battle and I frolicked barefoot through lush green meadows. I followed Moreall and Armand as they answered their call to duty bravely fighting a battle to protect their heritage.

Shirley Roe has succeeded in writing not only an entertaining piece of historical fiction but an informative and educational one as well. I will admit, before reading her novel, I had very little knowledge of the Celts, their philosophy, or their religious practices. It is obvious the author did an enormous amount of research to write a book of this magnitude and I commend her on the final product.

Although the storyline is set in seventh-century, the theme is one we can all relate to today. “A Call to Faith and Freedom” is a story of faith, loyalty, and human endurance. I enjoyed this read tremendously and I am honored to have had the opportunity to review it. I recommend with five stars!

First, you are introduced to the founder, Jeff Bezos, and quickly realize what an Intelligent and driven human being he is. Nevertheless, with this book as my guide I feel confident that I have the tools and informative information to now make a wise investment – and investing in Amazon reads like one lucrative venture.

Through this character, he illustrates the fundamental process of locating, preparing, and presenting a proposal that even the most savoir-faire government official would take notice.

As a writer and author, I have often considered applying for various government grants, but feeling inadequate as to the knowledge and process it for took I always declined. However, after reading Mr. Helweg’s book I now feel confident that if I apply the information the author set forth my chances of acquiring funding drastically improve.

A profound statement I took from the book was when he stated, “When you talk to people about your organization you must remember that what is important is not the fact that you are seeking funding, but that you have a mission. Your mission is not to raise money, but to assist families, neighborhoods, and organizations.”

As a reader, I felt the author went to great lengths to structure each category of information as an easy read. However, this book does not just serve those who have experienced divorce or the loss of a loved one, it is a path to follow for anyone wanting advice on preparing for such an occurrence.

Equally impressive was the chapter with regard to children of divorce. The author gives ten basic ways you can help your child better cope with either situation. Simply stated the advice given is immensely important to their well-being.

In the appendix alone are over fifty informative links to professionals such as State Higher Education Agencies, Bereavement Sources, and legal help. I was truly impressed with the amount of educational and instructive material found among the 288 pages. Okay listen up folks, when reading “Stressed in Scottsdale” make sure your bladder is empty because due to excessive laughter you are likely to pee your pants!

Jean Rubin, portrayed as the witty protagonist in “Stressed in Scottsdale” made her début in Marcia Fine’s satire series beginning with “Gossip.com followed by “Boomerang.” Fans of the award-winning author can take delight in knowing Jean Rubin is back in all her glory in this latest installment, as Fine continues to create a chaotic and comical ambiance for her readers’ enjoyment.

When my own manuscript was rejected not once but five times last week, my grocery bag containing two dozen eggs tumbled from my arms crashing to the pavement in the Wal-Mart parking lot, and I couldn’t bend down to retrieve it for fear my head would explode, I thought of Marcia Fine’s “Stressed in Scottsdale!”

I found my most memorable part of the book in chapter nine. The main character, Jean Rubin, experiences a mini stroke. It is scary that I can wholeheartedly relate to this section!

Marcia Fine’s keen eye for detail, sharp-witted humor, and addition of relatable subject matter create an entertaining and enjoyable read. Fine’s tongue-in-cheek annotations reverberate – opinions we would often like to express – but dare not! I found Ms. Fine’s comedic style of writing similar to that of Erma Bombeck’s humorist writings – often making the smallest incidents hysterical therefore drawing attention to the larger important issues.

“Egotistical, Repugnant, Enthrallingly Hilarious!”

Okay listen up people – you have to read this book! The second I read the description of “A**holeology” (The Science Behind Getting Your Way – and Getting Away with it) I was rapt. Who knew that being an A**hole could be so much fun! Steven B. Green, Dennis LaValle, and Chris Illuminati together cleverly master the art of comedic timing.

I opened the book and began to explore important questions such as (What Makes an Asshole?) (Why Be an Asshole?) And, the all-important question do I (Have what it Takes?) As I am a gal and not a guy, these questions did not really pertain to me – or did they? Now I am truly intrigued so I continue on.

After each chapter, you will read a chapter recap that includes some definitions of vocabulary words straight out of the author’s dictionary. Let me enlighten you with a few of my favorites from chapter two – Debaucherous (Indulging in every way possible; also see: “having fun”) Repartee (A clever retort used when someone hates you) Natural selection (The process in which the weak are picked off and the strong survive)

In chapter seven you will be educated as to how an A**hole should engage with others at such events as weddings, family gatherings, and funerals – yes I said funerals. It is imperative that you read this chapter slowly (give yourself time to soak it all in) if you want to be properly trained in “A**holeology.” Oh, and there is a FAQs section towards the end (an added bonus) you will not want to miss!

A**holeology was not what I expected. Will you find this book in the self-help section? Um…I don’t think so. However, if you have always been somewhat less than assertive, I promise you after reading A**holeology you will find the confidence and empowerment to speak your mind.

Co-author Chris Illuminati, is a frequent contributor to AskMen.com, Asylum.com, The Bachelor Guy.com, and Penthouse. In a recent interview he said, “Writing a book has always been a goal, although I never would have expected my first one to be about this particular subject! Wow, where do I start! I'm still seeking representation for my latest novel, 'Hollowing Screams.' I participated in the Heartland Writers guild conference this past Saturday in Cape Girardeau, and I must say it was quite informative. Several agents and publishers were there along with some distinguished author's. Author Robert Vaughan, founder of HWG has sold nearly 300 titles, and 20 million books. Vaughan's Write on the Beach annual writing event, is referred to as one of the most unique and productive writing seminars in the country.

Among agents, publishers, and writer's at the Heartland Writers conference were, Greg Tobin, Stephany Evans, Susan Swartwout, Bobbie Smith, Susan McBride, Charlotte Hubbard, Sharon Hohler, and Ken Gilbert.

PublishAmerica Confronts Amazon

Frederick, MD March 27, 2008 - As it continues to revolutionize the book publishing industry, PublishAmerica finds itself confronting Internet retail giant Amazon.com due to that company's strong-arm tactics.

Recently, Amazon presented the Frederick, Maryland based publishing company with an ultimatum, demanding the right to print each of PublishAmerica's almost 30,000 titles via their recently acquired in-house digital printing facility, BookSurge. If PublishAmerica does not comply, Amazon said it will retaliate by disabling the "Buy" button on all of its PublishAmerica listings. This demand would force PublishAmerica to submit 60,000 separate book files (text and cover), and redo each of them in order to conform to Amazon's complicated technical specifications.

Additionally, Amazon is also demanding a larger profit-per-book amount of each P:ublishAmerica book that they sell. This move would result in dramatically lower royalty payments for PublishAmerica's family of authors who sold books through the Internet retailer. When it attempted to increase its charges at earlier occasions, Amazon representatives suggested that any such extra expenses be passed on to authors. This is a suggestion that PublishAmerica executives find unacceptable.

In a letter issued to the company's authors, PublishAmerica's management said, "Not surprisingly, PublishAmerica refuses to be swayed by anyone's strong-arming tactics, big name or otherwise, especially given the fact that budging would mean an additional expense on the publisher's side of tens of thousands of dollars, on top of the unacceptable royalty losses for our authors. PublishAmerica never charges its authors as much as a single penny, ever. We are not going to change this winning policy under the threat of anyone's intimidation, nor are we willing to involuntarily accept any royalty cuts on behalf of our authors."

PublishAmerica will not comply with Amazon's ultimatum, and will not allow that company to dictate who will print PublishAmerica's books, and at what conditions.

Each of PublishAmerica's titles will continue to be available to Amazon, as will future releases. Amazon may access to PublishAmerica books in the same manner it has in the past through at least four separate venues. One of those venues is Lightning Source, a daughter company of the world's largest book wholesaler Ingram, which prints PublishAmerica books for retailers. PublishAmerica prints its additional sales volume in its own in-house digital printing facility, also located in Frederick, Maryland. PublishAmerica will continue its strong relationship with other retailers including Barnes and Noble, Borders, Waldenbooks, Books-A-Million and many other chain and independent bookstores, plus other major online vendors such as BarnesandNoble.com.

Opinion
I was immediately struck by the enormous amount of research that went into A Study in Red (The Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper). It brought 18th century London to life, making the story almost palpable. For over a hundred years, the mystery of Jack the Ripper has been investigated, written about, and discussed, but never like this. I could feel the cobblestones under my feet, hear the horses and carriages and smell the foul air of the London back alleyways.

The journal was an interesting tool, bringing the reader directly into Jack’s world and the insanity inflicting him. Experiencing the journal with Robert was intense as the mysteries unfold page by page. The suspense kept me engrossed well into the late evening hours, just as Robert had… I can feel the goose bumps now.

The identity of Jack the Ripper has been explored, but never in such a deliciously nail biting manner. Although fiction, the possibilities of who Jack really was and where he came from as well as his unfortunate victims felt all too real thanks to the obvious hard work of the author to create this sensational tale.

Intro To 'Hollowing Screams'

As you look beyond the gate your eyes focus on a massive structure of concrete and stone that rises high above the valley and winding stream below. Except for the hallowing screams that sometimes come from inside and echo down through the valley, the gray fortress sits on the hill silent as death.

It should have had a condemned sign posted at the entrance. One of the souls living inside had been condemned long ago, condemned to a life of living in hell.
It is bizarre to say, but even in our civilized culture, some human beings act out in a violent primitive manner, causing bodily harm and death. For this reason alone, incarcerating facilities will always exist. The terror of being thrust into a world in which time cannot be calculated, distance cannot be measured, and our own true existence is in question is incomprehensible.

In 1971, a mysterious stranger warned a small community of their impending doom. She prophesied that if they ignored the warning, they would experience a chain of devastating events. The outcome of their fate would lie in whether they chose to believe or not believe in something that could not be scientifically validated.
Is it safe to say that unexplained phenomenon does not exist?

Tagliaferri spent time working on a corporate video project for the USO of Metro DC at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, her assignment was to videotape celebrities visiting and boosting morale of the war-wounded, but it was an experience that would impact her deeply and ultimately change her assignment in life. Inspired, Alivia began writing. What resulted is her debut novel, entitled Still the Monkey, What Happens to Warriors after War, a reality-based work of historical fiction that depicts the relationship between a Vietnam veteran and Iraq War veteran facing their post-combat struggles.

A native of Williamsport, Pennsylvania and a 1999 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, Alivia left the 'gray-walled' corporate world behind in 2005 to focus on her passion - writing.

Her most recent work, an article entitled "What Every Veteran's Family and Friend Needsto Know about Post-Traumatic Stress and PTSD" was published in the July 2007 edition of The Veteran's Voice.

Featuring interviews with three experts in the field of post-traumatic stress, the article addresses the following three questions:

1. What are the 5 most important things families and friends should do or say if their loved one returns home from war showing symptoms of PTSD?
2. What are the 5 most important things not to do or say?
3. How can families and friends provide unconditional support versus enabling destructive behavior?

Total Success is Determined by Your Thoughts, Beliefs and Actions

Many people say they want success, yet they are not willing to do what it takes to achieve their desired outcome. I am a believer in Total Success. Total Success requires more then a successful business and a great income. Total Success is about having a balanced life, giving back and enjoying what you do.

In order to achieve Total Success there are specific thoughts and beliefs you must have. There are also certain actions you must take.

Success in anything goes beyond the obvious. Although you need a certain amount of skill and knowledge, your successes will come from the way you think, feel and act, coupled with intense emotion and a steadfast belief in “self.”

To achieve Total Success you must set goals. Setting goals cannot be a hit and miss process. It has to be systematic, deliberate and the cornerstone of every other aspect of what you do in order to create a successful, abundant, happy, and balanced life. Goals are about gaining direction, clarity and vision.

Even though the concept of goal setting took a while for me to grasp, once I did, the difference in my ability to achieve the outcomes I desired was amazing. Initially I dabbled in the process. Over time, as with virtually every other component of my success, it became very systemized.

My success is directly proportionate to my willingness to set goals, write down my goals, review my goals and stay committed to my goals.

If you want what you say you do, you have to set goals. It’s not that difficult and the results will amaze you. Get a blank book. On each page write down your goals in a specific category and date it.

Not only should you write your goals down, you must review them morning and night. Write your primary goals on a 3 x 5 card to make the review time more targeted. Doing this will keep you on target with what you want.

When you focus on your goals by writing them down and reviewing them on a regular basis amazing events will begin to happen. You will be able to manifest what you want a lot quicker.

However, you must do more than write them down and read them. You have to be committed to the outcome. This means that if you want to get and stay healthy, you will have to make choices around what you eat and how often you exercise.

It is the same with your finances. If you want to increase your wealth you must make specific choices on how you spend and invest your money.

Think of every area of your life you want improvement in. Decide what you want and what you are willing to do to get it. Write your goals down, read them morning and night and take the appropriate actions to achieve your desired outcome.

With dedication and commitment you will be well on your way to Total Success.

Holiday Memories

Ahhhh, I love this time of year! Trimming the Christmas tree, hanging lights and the smell of pies cooking in my mothers kitchen brings back many fond memories. My mother would go through many boxes of ornaments that she'd saved over the years reminiscing over all of them. She would strategically place all of hers in just the perfect spot. Our tree resembled the one that sat in the Macy's window display other than, it didn't have our trees special touch including, but not limited to popcorn string, paper cutouts of Santa and homemade ornaments. In my eyes it was the most beautiful Christmas tree ever.

I was reminded of just how magical Christmas can be early this year. My young son and his new bride were preparing to trim their new tree when they were devastated to find all of their ornaments had been destroyed. Instead of rushing out to buy new ornaments they decided to make their own. They spent hours drawing and cutting out holiday pictures, and at the same time unknowingly creating their own special memories.

It's not the extravagant ornaments that make the tree beautiful and memorable its the love you add by creating special moments in time. We as individuals sometimes forget what is really important in our lives. We're too busy planning our lives and not living it, so get busy and create your own special memories this holiday and enjoy.

Our Holiday Halloween

Our Halloween trick-or-treat customs actually descended from a belief that the family dead would bring gifts or so called goodies to the children upon their temporary return from the other side. If you stop to think about that, it makes quite a bit of sense. Gifts, food and sweets are still a standard method today when it comes to attracting our children to other holidays such as, Christmas and Easter.

Our celebration of Halloween rituals are relics of the pagan, or what was known as All Hallows Eve, later Christianized as "All Saints." Feast of the Dead was known as the time when the (crack between the worlds) would open up letting the spirits pass through. At this particular time the ghosts of the dead could join their ancestors at the feast. They could communicate with the living, leaving with them premonitions and omens too come.

In Ireland grave mounds were known as (fairy hills) and were said to open up just for the occasion. Most believed it was impossible to keep the fairies underground on Halloween. These so called fairies were simply referred to as pagan spirits. The church insisted they were demons and were abroad on Halloween.

Another term for the ancient pagan priestesses, whose business was to communicate with the dead, were also referred to as witches. Black cats, broomsticks, and bats were all familiar tools commonly associated with the witch.

In most recent times our holiday known as Halloween has become a heated topic in some churches as well as schools. Some feel Halloween is enticing our children to follow a devil worshiping crowd. I must say when I see my grandchildren dressed in those pirate and ninja outfits it frightens me beyond belief! Okay, now I'm just being sarcastic! But, I feel with such disturbing and realistic worries of our world such as war, disease, famine, maybe we should be focusing more on what affect these perils will have on our children, and less on a holiday that has been celebrated for centuries known as Halloween.

Yesterday and Today's Horror Flicks

As a small child one of the first emotions we express is fear. Fear of the dark, afraid to look under our bed, and fear of the unknown is not only terrifying but exhilarating.

The horror movies of today have evolved in that earlier horror flicks contained much less blood and gore. One of the classics, 'House on Haunted Hill' starring Vincent Price debuted in 1959 and terrified audiences without showing any gory details. Instead, the director played on our fear and let the audience use their own imagination. The master of horror Alfred Hitchcock knew how to manipulate and shock his audience by merely using camera angles and special lighting, creating eerie shots of terror that panned in and out quickly on his subjects. Who can forget the original 'Psycho'(1960) or 'The Birds' (1963) they are still horrifying to watch.

I've just mentioned a very small fraction of yesterdays classics, but I think you get the idea. In 1999 M. Night Shyamalan Sixth Sense debuted and received rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. Although Shyamalan opted to include a few explicit scenes of gore, but for only minor seconds, it still possessed much of the same elements as its counter classics. The same classic style of the past can be said about M. Night Shyamalan's 2001 'The Others'.

Again I've mentioned just a few of what I personally feel will stand the test of time as far as horror classics go. I remember the first time I saw the original 'Halloween' it was 1978 and just into a few minutes of the movie I was hooked. John Carpenter used our childhood fear of the boogyman, and one of the most celebrated holidays of the year to entice our underlying insecurities in the fear of the unknown and the supernatural. I was hooked! But I must say and I think many would agree, the director could have left out much of the slice and dice scenes, and it would have still been a terrifying horror flick.

Oh well, each to their own. One thing for sure there are plenty of horror flicks to choose from, and with such an enormous variety one is sure to find their favorite.

Haunting Darkness

Haunting images surround me arms stretched out calling me to come
In a whisper they tell me come don't be afraid we will take you in
Surrounded in darkness I enter their world of uncertainty
Laying on a blanket of torment being taunted by my own fears

Entangled in a mass of horror and confusion my body trembles
Legs strapped down by ropes of inescapable doom
My mind clouded with hysteria grisly images emerge
They cry out to me with blood curdling screams

Deeper and deeper I fall into this evil web of deception
For what was once mine is now theirs I am no more
My heart racing gasping for air I keep fighting to break free
To break free from this reign of evil that wants to devour my soul

Finally a sense of relief comes over my body a feeling of weightlessness
No longer do I see their arms stretching out to me
their screams beckoning me to come are now silent
My soul now surrounded by a soft glow of light

In a weak voice I whisper can I come can I come
Terror and torment has been replaced with forgiveness and love
I enter freely for this time my heart and soul comes willingly
I gasp for air no more the reign of evil has been broken

A Haunting

The year was 1965 some 42 years ago, but I remember like yesterday my first encounter with the unknown. Me and my family, (mom, dad, and older brother and sister) had just settled into our new home on 839 Agnes street. Excited to have my own bedroom I couldn't wait to see it. I didn't feel uncomfortable right away, it wasn't until bedtime that I began to feel anxious. I crawled into bed and kissing my mother goodnight she closed the door. I'd just closed my eyes when I felt the presence of someone, or some thing sit down on the foot of my bed. Opening my eyes I looked to find nothing there. I threw my blanket back and could see the indention on my mattress as if someone was sitting there.

After an hour of my mother assuring me that I'd been dreaming, she tucked me back into bed. I remember curling up into a ball at the head of my bed, and starring at the foot of my mattress. Although the strange occurrence didn't happen again that night, it did many times after. I'd get up many nights and sleep in the corner of my closet because I didn't feel safe in my own bed.
Just a few months after we moved in my father was killed in an accident at work. Shortly afterwards lights began to go on and off, doors would open and shut by themselves and often we were awaken by strange voices. Items would disappear only to reappear somewhere else. I seen several apparitions of an old woman dressed all in black moving about the house. More than once I'd wake to see her standing over my bed just starring down at me.

I remember my mother trying desperately to make some kind of logic out of what was happening. We were frightened to stay but couldn't afford to move. Over the years we would learn to accept whatever was there and tried to ignore it the best we could.
It's been many years since we lived there but what happened there still affects each one of us. I've encountered strange phenomenon everywhere I've lived, as my mother and siblings have as well.

Not Enough Hours In A Day!!!!!!!!

Stop by to say I'm still working on fourth book, well not like I should be! Seems here lately a million things are getting in the way. I spend all day with my grandchildren, then I go home and start supper, do laundry, check e-mails, try to answer e-mail... and the list goes on. But, I know there is no excuse for not writing even if it's just a few lines. I've got to get back into the swing of things. Well, speaking of writing, better get to it!!!!!!
